The Center for International Relations and Politics presents Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Silver Professor of Politics at New York University. In his talk, "Bad Governance is Good Politics," Bueno de Mesquita will present five rules that determine whether a leader survives in office or is ousted. The logic behind the rules reveals when governing badly is best for leader survival. He will illustrate the workings of the theory by discussing foreign aid and UN disaster relief with an emphasis on some of their pernicious consequences for ordinary citizens and for the advancement of freedom and prosperity.
